In many industries (telecommunications, software development, applications, consumer products) taking an idea from concept to reality requires a detailed writing discipline referred to as ‘requirement’ or ‘specifications’ development. This type of writing is not taught as part of any college writing or business curricula. It is, however, an exact science whose roots are founding in electrical engineering. In fact the IEEE created the templates for modern day requirement or specification development and documentation.
In this course the students will examine the standard methodologies of requirement writing, and work jointly with the instructor to create a roadmap for consistent and complete specifications development which achieve the desired outcome.
Topics include:
- Historical background
- The long and short of requirements docs
- The Roles of the writer
- Importance in a global workspace
- Analyzing the parts and its content
- Distractors, arguments and challenges
- Getting buy-in and content contributions
- Demand the inspection
- Evergreen or Ever Changing
- Problems, Issues and Concerns
This class varies from 2-3 days depending on the experience level and valid samples of in process documents available to work with. Additional days can be added for one-on-one consulting to hone specific skills and address individual concerns.
Because the content is intense, it is recommended that only 8-10 students attend any one session.
