This segment provides techniques for constructing a solid piece of writing based on the receiving audience. Students will be able to analyze the audience and their needs and then distinguish the tone, familiarity and level of detail needed to make a point.
The group will explore differences between informational, declarative and persuasive writing, the elements of construction needed for each and how to be specific, personal and positive.
- Creating a Plan
This activity will guide writers on how to get started, avoid rambling, sorting through and prioritizing content importance. Students will learn how to shot-gun content ideas and tools that can help them with mind-mapping.
- The Mechanics
Students will learn how to construct a solid writing, eliminate hackneyed expressions, reduce excessive wording and reducing compound/complex sentence structure.
Time will be spent in this section on mechanics of grammar, punctuation, active vs passive voice, strong verb choice, formatting and spelling.
- Writing Letters, E-Mails, Business Cases, Executive Summaries, and Reports
This segment explores the differences in style, tone, format, wording and content between the various content pieces. Student will leave with a working knowledge of how to construct each piece to achieve a specific goal and purpose.
